I know 3 people that have fallen. One shattered both ankles when he hit. The other was impaled on a stick that narrowly missed his femoral artery. The third woke up at the base of the tree.

I had 1 close call. I never clipped in until in the stand. Made the transition from the ladder to the stand one morning and slipped. Now I use lifelines.

Please extend my condolences to the family; with that said at the age of 66 I now use a Treestand Wingman. it is by far the best piece of equipment I've purchased in years. The device will automatically lower you to the ground and is reusable. So, please use some type of fall restraint device and minimize the slack in your tether.

I hunt exclusively from lock on stands. I take them down after season. I inspect the straps and replace as needed for the stand and the steps. I use lifelines going up, in and descending the tree always. I also let my wife know where on our place I am going. I also carry a walkie talkie and let het know I am up safely and when I am coming out. If I didn’t have the luxury of hunting on our own land I would have to have a phone to check in. I think this year I am going to invest in a system that will lower me to the ground should I fall. Please folks, hook up when hunting and stay that way.

It would be a good system to have.

Another consideration is to where the harness properly. Last thing you want to do is fall into a harness and have parts of you getting smashed that you do not wish to be smashed. It is not very comfortable to hang in a harness. ( it is better than falling). A plan for self rescue is a great idea. Not a bad idea to use that system to see if there are any glitches.

Just received my Treestand Wingman last week. It is a game changer, I chose the stainless version. This device will save life and limb. But like any safety device it will only work if we use them. Hope everyone thinks about safety in both hunting and fishing.
Pass the "Sportsman Baton" on before you're gone, promote values for others to hunt and fish upon.

Thank you. Yep. No excuses. If not for yourself, then for your family and friends.

Very good idea. I bought a light jacket the other day that has a lanyard exit hole between the shoulders already sewn in. It is good that companies that make outdoor clothing have started incorporating these feathers

I'll add too that for anyone that's saddle hunting, consider adding an additional bridge that's about 1.5" longer than your primary. If for whatever reason your primary fails, the second will catch before you begin falling.
Also, wear your lineman's rope ascending and descending. My dad's foot slipped off of one of his steps coming down the other night. He still had his lineman's rope attached. He spun off the side of the steps, the rope grabbed the tree and prevented what would've been about a 10-12' fall.
