Here in Ohio the timber rattler is protected. I have only seen one many years ago coon hunting after it bit a hound right at the truck as we were about to turn them out. The dogs handler dispatched him. I have snake chaps in the closet but rarely use them anymore as my knees and hims limit my woodsy activities.

i am pretty sure "canebrake " rattlers are protected here as well , they are the much larger more colorful version of the timber rattler .
canebrakes are more like subtropical rattlers and get quite large , i used to see some huge ones when i was a kid down in east Texas.

I try to avoid vipers as much as possible. Had a close encounter years ago in NC with a huge cottonmouth which was enough for me.

I mostly worry about copperheads ,they are in large supply in these parts . They hide very very well in spots you might put your hand .
My son in law's yard crew guy got bit on his hand last year . He was ok in the end ,but had to go to the hospital .
It typically won't likely be a deadly thing , but to be sure it is painful and really freaks people out .
and in the oak woods they have the MOST perfect camo ever .....that is a fact
I worry about my daughter and her mom some as they love to wander on our place in the oak thickets .
I tell them never go without boots and NEVER pick anything up without looking REALLY close in the area first !

Seems I moved to Copperhead central in Mississippi. The wife runs a redbone coon hound and think all our dogs have been bit at least once by them. I did some reading on how best to deal with them. My Ruger Blackhawk in 45 colt with my handloads using # 12 shot seems to work right well. Early spring they do double duty on carpenter bees as well.

Handloaded shotshells and carpenter bees make a fun solution to a problem

You and me both. We have some big non poisonous Black Racers at our RC Club flying field and they love to pop up out of the grass, hiss and then move away. The biggest one we named Willy and he did do a good job around the shed with the mice.
