Used to have excellent places with good herds and shot too many young bucks but can't tell you how many times we would let good young bucks go when they hop the fence and a while later you hear BOOM! Personally I went to shooting ugly younger bucks with little potential and were great eaters. Still let the fine young ones go as I was content with shooting a nice doe. Only two really old wall hangers I have seen then killed in last decade were both total flukes and not while I sitting in my stand just wandering around and basically committed suicide. JMHO that buck looks like a 4 year old. way you described him sounds like he might have had some kind of health issue to not be really swollen and energized for the rut.

I'm going to say young. He doesn't have that "roman nose" like the old ones tend to get. Kind of narrow in the chest as well.

Do you have CWD in your neck of the woods? A deer with CWD will look thin and somewhat emaciated.

the tests they been doing a lot the last 2 years indicate no CWD in our area .
they sit at meat lockers and even do the road kills and grab samples here .
we argued a bit more about him the other night at the campfire .
the guy that photo hit him wont shoot a young buck for sure .
so no matter his age he is safe around him if he thinks he is young
