5 days until the fellowship and kick off of hunting season gets going in my neck of the woods. Opening day of Dove season is Sept 5th. We cook out before and after hunting. I enjoy the time with friends and family. We normally have a good shoot, but this year I'm not seeing as many birds. Maybe they are on the way here lol. We will have a good time even if we don't pile them up.

Here is my Grandson with his first two doves. I don't know who was more proud, him, his dad ( my son) or me. Just having three generations of us out in the field was awesome. Today was the second day of our first season. We ended up with 7 birds. No one else hunting the fields made for a perfect time to let my grandson get comfortable with the rules of having a shotgun in the field and how to hunt along side other hunters. We watched several fly away as he was learning target acquisition, but he did well and and it was heart warming to see my son be patient and let him take his time and shoot. I miss the big hunts I used to go to, with the cookout afterwards and the fellowship and sportsmanship, but, a quiet day on a weekday opener, with your son and grandson is truly a hunt to be treasured.

Here in OK we had heavy t storms in the morning so I got out to the field late. I was surprised to see that the field was loaded with dove even before it quit raining. My dog kicked them up so i got set up and ended up with my limit.

Today I made it to the field early everything was perfect. The birds started coming in and I managed a double. One bird landed in the field and the other one ended up in the woods. I sent my dog after the one in field first, then after the one in the woods and when she came back she was covered in blood. Some how she cut her tongue and was slinging blood everywhere. I immediately rushed her back to the house and got the bleeding to stop long enough to see a small scratch on the end of her tongue. I was amazed how much blood came out of such a small scratch.

I plan to plant about 12 acres of milo as part of my dove hunt field this year.....probably have 2 strips of 5-6 acres each in between 3 strips of sunflowers and one smaller strip of wheat. Will mow 10 ft lanes thru unharvested milo every 20 ft a week before season opens similar to my sunflower prep.

I plan to use milo in my deer plots and duck holes on my riverbank farms also

That sounds like a great time! I haven't hunted doves or waterfowl since the early 90's and miss both. We used to have some fantastic dove hunts in SE Missouri, glad to see they are still going on.

my people are from jackson area and went to SEMO had great hunts around sikeston, bell city, benton and fruitland. buddies family had store in bell city and we would hunt all around there for many years and had incredible hunts. especially around rodeo ground in sikeston.

now hunt them up on public places around macon as have a cabin up there and hunting is hit or miss but do get some action. nothing like the waves of them back in 70's an80.s in SEMO. Plus duck hunting at duck creek
