    hdhntr,

I started out prepping dove food plot fields about 24 years ago for my dad , his brother and his many friends/neighbors from LOZ.,he would always show up in Charleston with 6 or more friends ready to hunt ...most of his buds on LOZ had ties to STL.....dad was retired ARMY,a past CG of Fort Leonard Wood.....my farms are around Charleston,(near Sikeston)....I have as much fun ( probably more) prepping the dove fields all summer as I do shooting with friends and family on opening day. Of course, the traditional grilled dove luncheon for hunters and special guests are a special time as well.

Went and checked to see if any birds are showing up after I mowed a few strips through my wheat field.

You should have called me. I used to love a good dove hunt. They are starting to mow the sunflowers here now.

I love me a good dove shoot!
The banter back and forth, and doves on the grill.
That high line shot looks great.

back when we didn't hunt them , we were only managing deer . but one evening when they just about drove us crazy while we sat in the shade eating ALL the seed we just put down we grabbed a shotgun each and a box a shells and just sat in the dirt out in the field and they tried over and over to sit beside us .

My best shoot was a benefit put on by the man that owns a trucking company. Biggest field I’ve ever hunted and it was covered with birds. Tractors with hay wagons to take you to and from the field. Never on opening day either, always the Saturday after. After the birds were shot at on everyone else’s fields they would all pile in here. Food for 200 people on hand, both breakfast and lunch. If you could shoot, you could be headed home in about an hour with a limit in your bag. Some great dogs showed up too, one visla I especially liked to watch. I’ve already spoken to my boss about next years time off for the opener. No shoots to attend down here. I’ll be driving to Tennessee, might even miss a few extra days.

Opening day is less than 2 weeks away …. I've got hundreds of doves in my wheat and sunflower fields this week......we sure don't need a cold front or a hurricane out of the Gulf moving up the river and our way next week...…..those birds would vanish overnight...….tat happens way to often around here ! I mowed my wheat in 15-20 foot strips last Sunday and then burned 1/4 of the wheatfield ….filled my "waterhole" 2 days ago.....the doves are fogging into the fields.....shot skeet at a county gun range last weekend to start preparing for all the excitement of a good hunt with friends and family members !

I burned part of the field about a week ago and it looks like it worked out. I hope they stick around because there is a cold front rain tomorrow on opening day.
