Is it that they just have not been managed over the years as the have in other parts, lack of a good food source or just genetics?
In the 50s and early 60s a 130-140 was a good deer in south Texas but through good management they have great deer now. We were the same here in Ms. back in those days and had very few deer, until hunters woke up and decided to do a better job of management. Now we have plenty of deer and some really nice ones in places.

I hunted around Robert Lee, not that far from you, back in the early 80s and a 130 was a pretty good deer for those parts back then. I was hoping that the quality had gotten better by now. I found south Tx more to my liking, around Hindes and George West. I hunted with Roy Hindes for years. He was the one that taught me how to age deer on the hoof and what quality deer you can have if you are patient and let them grow, thin the does and cull the bucks. We are doing that in a lot of places in Ms now and it is paying off. They are doing a exceptional job behind the Ms River levee and have as good of free range deer as there is anywhere. Those clubs are beyond my pocketbook.

i don't know why the bucks don't get super racks in our area , once in a blue moon you will see one that is nice ,but 130 inch buck is about what you can expect to see on an older buck in that area . i know some get larger though and i saw a 14 a man let live on his place till it died of old age and it probably hit 150 or so in its prime , maybe even a little better from what i could tell .
most likely the main factors are age and nutrition is my thoughts . i don't think many get past 4 or 5 and not many get fed lots of high protein .
i know there was a real super duper one a few years ago i hunted for a few years and to be sure he was a dandy , i think he went in the 140 to 150 range last time i saw him and i think he was around 7 or 8 the last time i saw him .

We've been managing our hunting club for close to 20 years and we have only killed a few 120s. A average buck is 100in but 5mins down the road there's lots of farms and soybeans and they get some monsters. Our soil is rocky and we lease so we can only plant smaller fields. Everyone thinks you let the get old they'll get big, that's not always true. You have to have all the factors to grow monsters.

Our hill deer and South Ms. deer do not get to the size that we have in the Delta. A 130 is a good deer in these areas. It seems that good dirt raises good bucks. Also the hills and south still run dogs and shoot anything legal by the state. You won't find a club or private land in the Delta that will allow dogs on there land, unless deer are out of season and only for hogs.
But what comes with that is $$$. I have been trying to find a club in the Delta or behind the levee but at 200k-500k to join and dues of 5k and up per year, they are out of my budget.

my bud shot a 174 ten point that dreams are made of years ago on a place that ran dogs . he swore the buck was running with its twin brother and said they were following a red fox . now mind you I think the story was real and to be sure I saw the buck myself and he still has it on his wall . they had 2 bucks on the wall in the camp house that looked quite similar as well .
the deer was aged at over 9 by the Texas parks and wildlife and in Arkansas where it came from they said I think 11 ….it had no teeth and its belly was full of whole acorns and it was about in as good a health as I ever seen a whitetail …..go figure
