When I was a kid, deer hunting was all about the kill and then I was finished with it. Now that I'm older, I have found that I get more enjoyment from the planning and scouting, putting out feeders and checking cameras, and the 4 wheeler riding on my trails around our 150 acre farm where I hunt. I enjoy watching the wildlife and I know that I can take a deer just about any day I want one. No pressure to tag out and call it quits before November is over.

This year, my son came in from college and took a fairly nice 8 point on the opening afternoon. My 77 year old dad went on a few warmer afternoons and saw several deer, both bucks and does, but chose not to pull the trigger this year. He just likes to chew tobacco and watch the deer eat. I took a buck last weekend so I would be sure to have deer steaks at Christmas for some of my inlaws who don't hunt, but like to eat it.

It's about out enjoying what you do and respecting nature. I have a friend who is a game warden and every year some dumb head redneck shoots their mechanical deer the first night they put it out. I just don't get people who can't follow the simple rules about what's legal or not. It's so easy to just do it right.

Enjoy your deer steaks and the experience of hunting......the whole experience of it all, not just the kill or the fine meal that is the end of it. Good job, D.

I’m smacking my lips, tasting the good Chile she will make. Nice doe and very good account of it all. I gave my oldest daughter the Winchester 2 years ago, and both she and the granddaughter have taken deer with it, so I feel that it was what should have been done. Knees and back give me fits and not at all sure that I could show the animal the respect it deserves if it ran off into someplace rough. Kinda miss it but have some good memories to enjoy. Enjoy the time in the woods D, I always did.

D,as for not being able to find the deer in you scope up close, learn to shoot with both eyes open. Your other eye will help you find the deer. I taught myself by practicing with a 22 with a scope on moving animals. You don't have to shoot, just learn to find and follow them. It takes a little getting use to but, once you learn, you will be glad you did.

Along the same line as Deltarat get you a .22LR or a .17, start squirrel hunting.
Good to eat, and you won’t even notice that scope any more.
It’s all practice, scope 500 squirrels and it will be easy to be on that deer.

I had no problem putting the scope on the 2 I got.(see It Happened Again) Just that 1st one was so close. I could have thrown the gun at him. I have since put a new stock on my old marlin 35 remington and removed the scope. I am planning on using it in the woods, but probably not till next year. Redge, I really like squirrel , but I use a 20 gauge. Did not hunt them yet around here, but I still have a little time.
And thanks guys for the kind words and advice and encouragment.
