    Default Scent Matters

While I did not start my hunting career until I turned 45 years old it only took me about 20 minutes to realize that scent control is quite possibly the single most important part of having a successful hunt second only to bringing a weapon. I say this out of pure frustration from watching others drink cokes, eat pasteries, and use tobacco products in the stand and then wonder why they aren’t harvesting game.

Admittedy, I probably take the scent control a bit far as I will only consume bottled water in the stand. On the other hand I harvested 6 animals in 7 days. As they say “ the proofs in the pudding”.

Good deer! And scent does matter. We play the wind on our property on every hunt and do not walk around on the property during hunting season except going to and from the stand. We are typically still seeing bucks the last week of season when the neighbors are not seeing much at all.

About all you can do is play the wind, and stay out of the woods like you said. Ideally you should have various stands set up so you can hunt them depending on wind direction.

A deer's sense of smell is significantly better than that of a dog. Nothing you can do will cover up your odor.

Some of the biggest deer ever killed were by old timers with a 30-30 while smoking a cigarette.

    Nice buck, congratulations.

I have been processing animals 4 days now. All I have left is turning 128 lbs into sausage and smoking 4 hams Friday. I am getting a little tired.
