Thats nuts..mines pretty soft on the shoulder. I've never known anyone to say it's got heavy recoil. What bullet weight?

Maybe I missed it,but what make is your 30-30 ?, I'm not doubting you, just wondering why it kicks so bad.I have an old gold trigger Marlin,my brother has an old Winchester, and neither has much recoil,so it is kind of odd that you've been blessed with a kick of the mule.

......Oops,now I see it's a Marlin,my bad.Have you looked it over to see if there is something broken causing the stock not to absorb the recoil properly ?

I have owned both the 30-30 Marlin and the Winchester and the recoil was less than my Rem. 742 30-06.Ketchn don't know man you may have a problem with that rifle. Both my 30-30's didn't have much recoil.

I'm thinking hard about buying a lever 30-30 and making him learn on that. Maybe a Marlin 30-30? Other folks said a .243 would be the ticket. I'm sure they would both work, thoughts/opinions are welcome.
Marlin makes a compact 30-30. I just bought one with an 18" barrel for deer and hogs in tight brush. I put a recoil pad on it to add a little length to the stock, it has negligible recoil.

A Thompson Contender, stainless, in 7x30 Waters, with a 2x7 Leopold VX 2, single shot is the best I found...light, short enough, safe, and has a flat trajectory with minimum report and recoil. In my tests, it is more accurate than the 30-30 in both rifle, and 14 inch pistol

I would go with the 243 youth, savage makes a great one for the money. My son was 10 when he started with it using 100 gr hornady whitetails, it just flat gets the job done. Very accurate with hardly any recoil, which is very important for a kid starting out. Jmo, good luck and God Bless

I agree with Seekbigger on the 243. I bought one last year for my 9 year old daughter and after a few shots on the lead sled, she was ready to shoot it free hand and had no problems. We were also shooting the rounds that Seekbigger mentioned, the 100 grain Hornady Whitetail. good luck in the search.

I watched a young lady take a deer with a 223 ,52 gr,hollow point at 172 yds recently. Now before all the experts climb down my chimney, this little gun has personally been responsible for taking noumourous deer over the last several years, without a single lost deer.
My son at 7 yrs old shot his first buck a ( a 10 point ) at just under 180 yards with 223 , 52 gr hollow point several years ago,The buck dropped in its tracks. While there are limits,I have absolutely no doubt a 223 or a 243 would be just fine for a sprouting deer hunter. My late father who took more whitetail deer than memory could count, retired his trusted 3006 a few years before he passed, and picked up a 243,his deer kill numbers never missed a beat, and neither did the distance of his shots.
