Hunting with a bow in the afternoon presents many challenges. The impending darkness seems to put an urgency in every facet of the pursuit. Add to that a bright full moon that just illuminated the forest floor tonight for the crepuscular critters that begin their nightly feeding and you quickly realize that decisions have to be made fast but sure when choosing a shot. About 6:45 this afternoon a small 4pt came through the field to my right and started munching acorns like a hog at the trough.

His attention was definitely not on me, and to my left is where all the action began. I decided NOT to shoot this guy when I saw his small rack, and craning my neck back left I spied two nice bucks having some words under the pear trees. The little guy actually tipped me off to this action. Seems an 8pt was feeding under a pear tree about 50 yards out and enjoying his sweet treats immensely. He bowed up a little when Mr. Big Horns came from the woods and wanted to eat from under the same tree. A bigger bodied deer but only a tall thick 6. Didn’t matter, they have figured out the pecking order and all this time the little guy crossed completely in front of me and was headed to the acorns behind me and would certainly catch my wind. Mr Big Horns stiff legged his way to the old pear tree that was dropping its few fruits and the 8 point tucked his tail and sulked right straight towards my stand, definitely irate but probably thinking about the acorns in the woods behind me. Time was running out, I was going to get a shot on the 8, and with the little 4pt nose up close in my business I could not wait on Mr. Big Horns to make his way into range, so I let one fly! THUMP! I like that sound, did not miss this 28yd shot. I waited about 20 minutes for the woods to settle, got down in the dark and found this where I last saw him go towards the tree line.

Good blood trail, lung blood or major heart vessel blood, the arrow found the bread basket and quickly done its job. About 150 yds in the woods I found my quarry.

Not an old deer, but with a bow I am very pleased with my harvest. A few words of thanks to our great Creator and I began the process of getting him out of the woods and down to the road for field dressing and loading. Not an easy task at night by myself but I called home to inform the wife of my success, late arrival, and fading phone battery. Mr Big Horns exited out the back of the field and little guy bounded through the woods behind me but never snorted. After loading I cleaned my hands and knives up a little and heard the coyotes singing to the bright moon that illuminated the surrounding fields. They are next!!

Thanks for the kind comments guys. The grand babies came in last night but did not get to see the deer. When they saw the antlers today they were more concerned about the blood on the skull cap and petting his hair. Momma didn’t see this but hey you have to start them out somehow!!

Well done brother. I know the thrill of the hunt well. Your hunting story stirred the hunter in me that has been dormant for almost twenty years.
I used to love deer hunting... so much in fact... during deer season I couldn't even focus on anything else.
    Congrats and thanks for sharing.
