Illinois deer hunting is restricted to shotgun or black powder. I prefer 1ounce slugs and don't worry about it. Only had two deer get back up never to be seen again. I suspect I hit them in the shoulder. I did harvest one deer with a slug in it's shoulder.

As for a rifle Cal. Any mentioned will work. I always wanted a .270 for deer. Bigger calipers come with bigger recoil.

I know, 12 gauge 1 ounce slugs have a hell of a kick. I usually go with 2 3/4" shells instead of 3" or 3 1/2". 3 1/2" 1 ounce 12 gauge will rock your world, and can make you trigger shy.

Get a caliper your comfortable shooting all day. It won't make you trigger shy and anticipate the recoil. When you anticipate the recoil you push the gun off target and miss. The hard part, most men want to be manly and get the big calipers. I have more respect for shoot placement then caliper. I hunt with guys that go through a box of shells every day and come back empty handed. I'm more of the one shot one kill type. A box of five shells will last 5 years if I only get one permit per year.

Well I ended up ordering one since I couldnt find what I wanted in 4 stores. I ordered a Remington 700 SPS in .243. My reasoning is this; it's plenty to get the job done with proper shot placement and I can pass it to my girlfriend or her son when he gets a little older. All this looking has made me realize that I need a couple others as well.

Not a bad choice, hope you put some meat in the freezer. It will be a good rifle if your girlfriend decides she wants to hunt.

I use a 270 because it shoots very flat and out to 200 yards I do not have to consider bullet drop. I also have a 308 that is very accurate. The 308 has a lot less kick than the 270 but then again it also has less powder.

I'm already planning on getting another one this winter sometime haha. Going to use the "I really bought this for you to use" excuse with the Mrs. Will probably grab a 308 like I use to have. Going to build a 6.5 bench gun as well sometime soon. Got the fever back after not shooting for awhile. Have an AR and 10/22 I've still never shot I need to break out soon.

I like to hunt so being a good shot makes the hunting more productive . I have a 200 yard range in the back yard so target practice is convenient. Matching a good scope to a rifle is just as important as having a good rifle

I also have to many weapons.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how any red blooded American can say they have to many weapons. My last count at my house was 76 and I'm still begging for more. I will never be satisfied until I have more weapons than the government.

I don't count them! I don't even store them in one place. Someone else in the house might use it as evidence to purchase more of something they like.

I have a rifle and pistol range at my house. After shooting the number of years that I shot, and all the abuse, I got out of it for quite awhile. Now I have a daughter that is extremely interested so I built a range and got back to it. One of my ranges I can shoot 200 yards. Directly off the porch. The other one goes out just over 500 yards. I could get 800 or 1000 if I ever decided to put a berm up on the neighbors property.

With my .243, I've had really good success with the winchester super X 100 grain bullets.
