A 30.06 is a good all around choice. Cannot go wrong with this cartridge size. The variety of ammo is almost endless. In thick woods I use a 220 grain bullet.
In Montana I used a very light flat shooting bullet 150 gr.
I think I remember a friend using even lighter version for smaller animals, jack rabbits, etc.
A variety of ammo is readily retail available and reloadable if so desired.
I love 7mm- 7-08,280-my favorite- 7 mag for the bigger stuff or long range. I have never lost a deer with any of them.
Open the flood gates. All depends on where and distance you'll be hunting. I load .17 Rem center fire for a game warden here in MS and out to 300 yards if you hit a deer I promise you it will not take another step. But he only shoots them in the neck and he only shoots in fields. I've seen raindrops knock the little 20 grain bullet off target by more than 6" in 150 yards. On the other hand 444 or 45-70 can cut though some woody stalks of weeds and still be on at 100 yards. Pretty specific gun though and only good in certain instances. 308, 06, 7 mag, 270 all have very very very multiple uses. Anything from varmint to elk. Ammo wildly available and just as many choices of bullets and weights. There is NO right answer. That's why you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO BUY/POSSESS/OWN more than one. Sorry I had to throw that in there in case my wife reads this. Good luck on your decision.

Another thing to consider is the possibility of future hunts for big game other than deer. There are minimum calipers required depending on what state and animal you are pursuing. It's just another thing to consider before purchasing a new gun.
I have 2 now I use ...both are 30 06 ....highly available ammo in most areas of the us
One is an all camo close range version and one is all black long range version and reaches out there .
Pretty tough on everything I hunt if it’s a halfway decent shot and leaves good blood trails most of the time as well.
I used to love my 308 back when though and killed a ton a deer with a 30 30 .....
It’s likely more about how you hunt and what you want though when it comes to deer rifles .

There have been more 30.06s retired than most other calibers sold. They are not fancy, but get the job done on any game animal in North America. Cheaper ammo than a lot, more weights available in ammo, and lots of info out there. Hard to beat.
I’ve really enjoyed the posts in this thread. I have utized many different calibers and if shot placement is good they work and if shot placement is bad, it’s bad. Whatever caliber is chosen do two thing please. First, practice cause nothing replaces trigger time. Second, love the caliber you use cause that feeling will bring added enjoyment to the animals humanely harvested and the great target shots that are put on paper.
I bought mama a 7mm-08 for it's light recoil. She loves it. Took it to the woods one day and shot a deer with it and was so impressed that I went and bought myself one and now it's what I carry unless I'm hunting in thick stuff, which is when I dust off the ole Marlin .44 mag lever gun.
Take a look at the 7mm-08 ballistics, for such light recoil, you are good to go on deer sized game out to 300 yards without much adjustment. Capable of killing up to elk in closer ranges.
I jumped a deer while walking to a stand one day at about 40 yards, as he took off to run I swung through on him and let 'er eat. Guess he turned a bit as I shot as the bullet entered his right ham and stopped in the very end of his left lung, penetrating about 36 inches of deer. Figure if I can't kill em with that, then they don't need killin.
