Thread: Deer Rifle for Wife??

243 no problem with recoil. I have one ( Browning bar 243) that my girls killed there first deer with and grand kids killed there first deer with. Hope I am around to see the great grand kids get one with it also.

Any of the short actions mentioned would do the job,I'm partial to the 243 myself.

Close to medium range the 243. long range 6.5 Creedmoor

243, 6.5 Grendel’s a good choice if you haven’t looked at it.

If you go 243 or 6.5 for hog you better get premium bullets. Barnes XXX would be the route I went. 7mm08 would be my choice. 270 in the right gun might be worth consideration. Savage kicks a little harder than most rifles in my opinion. Kinda like Mossberg does.

I started my son with a 7-08 when he was 12. You can start loaded down with a smaller bullet and work up to her comfort level. Remington makes a neat Model 7 that is short and easy to handle.

all are great choices. Id suggest, if possible, to get her some shooting time with each of them. Select one then get her settled in on quality trigger time. good luck and please share with us the route finally decided on. I have personally shot each of these calibers and love them all.

I don't know if there's any difference in recoil between 243 and 308. I'm a big fan of 7mm0/8. I tricked my wife with Remington manage recoil, then when she was hunting swap out the good ammunition and don't tell her. Also a heavy gun will eat some recoil . Almost every year a kid or wife i know will shoot and lose a deer with a 243. I know people will say its shot placement but in most cases the shooter lacks experience. In fact my club will not allow 243. Just my opinion doesn't mean anymore that the rest
