    Default Moving to south Georgia

Florida boy here retiring in January and moving to Georgia because that's where my new wife lives. Her family is all there and she lives in the country with a catfish pond in the front yard! Reminds me about the old joke about the guy looking for a woman with a boat. send pictures of boat! Anyway it's near Hazlehurst and the closest Crappie lake as far as I can tell is Blackshear and that's a two hour drive. I found a lake about an hour from the house called Banks Lake. Every post I found on here was really old. I think they drew down the lake in 2007 or so. Anybody have any recent info on that lake? I understand it's full of stumps but does it have any specks? Thanks for any help.

If I remember right Banks lake is a small shallow lake the is more of a bass fishing lake. I don't how good the crappie fishing would be. In most small lakes the crappie fishing is not very good but some small lakes have good crappie fishing. Blackshear is a great lake and worth the 2 hour drive to catch nice crappie. I drive 2 hours or more all the time to fish Oconee. Talking about fishing and hunting on the way makes the trip seem short. Good luck with your fishing.

I fished Banks a few times, mostly bass and pickerel, good bass lake when I was there. There are some managed crappie lakes and the Canoochee River on Fort Stewart a little over an hour east of Hazelhurst. Beautiful little river, not full of crappie, but they are there, along with bass, stripers, redbreast, etc. I'll add a couple of articles from Georgia Outdoor News also, maybe help you locate a few spots closer. I'm sure you'll hear from someone who knows that area. Good luck with the move. Tight lines

Check the PFA's near there. They usually have crappie.

Lake Blackshear is a good crappie lake, for camping- Georgia Veterans state park located just outside of Cordele on Hwy 280, about 8 miles west of Cordele.-They have several boat landings there and a mega landing on park grounds. It is a lake that you have to learn to fish, just like any other lake. I normally troll, some shoot docks, some spot fish. I also drive 2 hours when I go.

    Welcome to South Georga.
I have a couple friends that fish Banks, and it isn't a great crappie lake at all. Good for bass, bream, pickerel...
I live in Lowndes county just South of Hazelhurst, and fish Blackshear, good crappie lake. Just can be tough. Lots of pleasure boats and jet skies sometimes. I also fish Lake Talquin in Norrh Florida. Takes me 2 hr to get there you maybe 3 hr, but it is an awesome fishery. Loaded with timber and not much pleasure boating going on.

Thanks! Don't you hate jet skis?!!Nothing screws up a good trolling spread like a bunch of jet skis blasting by! If you come to North Florida check out Lake Lochloosa. NO jet skis, stumps or pleasure boats. Looks like Lake Blackshear is the place. I've got a travel trailer so my wife can pull the boat and we can stay a few days.

i think you will love the campground Ga veterans State park . it is in the most center part of the lake . above the bridge is shallow and a lot of timber below the bridge is deep channels and shallow areas.you can now reserve a campground . i would reserve a campsite on the east end mainly because of the Bar and Grill.i like site 10 or some where in that area.i now have a camper at the North end of the lake about 5 miles so i don`t have to pull ever time i go .
retired and now i will always fish

Thanks! My wife likes to camp and fish so we're planning a trip to Blackshear! Thanks for the suggestion of a campsite.
