Thread: Small Planner Boards

these are some mini offshore boards I modified. They have since come out with this board with floats. I also use these mini stealth planer floats from redirig that I really like.

I have some plastic floaters that suppose to do the same as planner boards. I never used them guess I need to find them and try them out.

I don't use planer boards but I think they would be more useful when the crappie are deep, to get your baits down to the crappie and keep the baits separated. During the spawn the fish are in 5 foot of water of less it seems like they would be more trouble than they would help.

Here is where they teals help. When fish are that shallow they are more spooky, you can use boards to run in shallow water while keeping boat out of your target area. Plus using boards you can run crank baits in much shallower water than you would on straight lines and you have more control over your depth.

I was looking just last night at some "Church" planer boards. Kinda small. Five and a half inches long. Around 15 bucks each...a left and a right.

They work pretty good, buddy uses them but if they don’t have the floats installed look at the off shore like in my picture, I modified mine but they have since come out with that size board with a float made on. Another nice thing about the off shore you can change it from right to left in a matter of seconds. Lots of times I’ll be fishing 4 to one side. Then change and run 2&2.

Thanks Cray for the information. I didn't haven't idea about the shallow water use. That is a great use to keep your boat out of the target area. I also have been thinking this year of using crank baits shallower than I have before (so using them with the crank baits in shallow water is another great idea I didn't know.) I think the crappie will like it. LOL.
