    Default Lake Oconee January 28th

My brother and I had a fun trip to Oconee. It was so foggy at times we had to use the GPS and run at idle for long distances. But we were able to get onto the main lake from Sugar Creek and found some fish. We "combo trolled" in the dense fog...again having to relying on the GPS to know where we were. The bite was early and good until about 11 am.

Water temperature was 47.7 degrees when we started and 48 degrees when we left. Most of the fish we caught were in 25 FOW and either in the trees or very near the trees. Frank caught one long striper and got it in without any line tangles. We caught around 30 but kept 22 over 10.5".

Thanks again to our mentors. We are new at crappie fishing and very fortunate to have great mentors.

Good job Charlie. You and Frank had an excellent day of fishing especially considering the tough conditions.

The fog was pretty bad but cleared up not long after daylight down by the dam area. Glad you found some!!! When I first moved here I was having very little success tight lining so I rigged my boat for long lining and it greatly helped with my fishing. I know the water was very clear and this may have been my problem.

I rigged like Hotwater and Kissimmee Kowboy have their boats rigged so we can do both at the same time. Hotwater calls that "combo trolling". We are catching more fish on the long lines right now, but the tight lines are catching some too. This time we added two 16' long lines to the front with the six 16' tight lines. In the back we are now running two 14', two 12' and four 10' long lines. It worked very well.

That striper took one of the front 16' long lines and had crossed under and diagonally to the rear of the boat. I am not sure how Frank got it in without it wrapping up the entire spread in the back.

Maybe we will see you down there one day soon. We prefer to fish during the week and let the working folks have the lake on weekends.

Nice. I have yet to do that well, but I've only been there once (2 hr drive). My first time it was super-muddy but I still caught a few, mostly small, but didn't keep any, my first visit and all. This was at Sugar Creek.

Man, I wanted to go Monday, but I got this dang ankle sprain or sumpin' that has had me gimped up, limping around. I slept in, and then went to Bass Pro. Going to Ortho Dr tomorrow, and will hopefully get mobile enough to launch and recover boat solo.

    Good report and nice catching.
Never fished Oconee but may have to put on my bucket list.
I lived on Jackson lake for years back in the 90s but never gave Oconee a try.
    Thanks for sharing.

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!
