    Default Oconee today

This lake continues to be an enigma to me, I catch a crappie here and there but never more than that . Ive fished Jackson for years in the winter and catch limit after limit. Today I trolled slow, fast, different colors jigs and bodies. I can do just about as well on Sinclair so what gives, their the same drainage. What I like about Oconee is the average size of the crappie are larger so come hell or high water I going to learn this lake. Anyone have advise..

I haven't been on the lake since 12/3 but from what I hear the fish are deep in the river/creek channels and near submerged timber. The lake has a good stain on it from all the rain. When you find fish on your graph note the depth and troll accordingly with dark colored jigs or minnows. Personally, I would rig double 1/16 jigs baited with soft plastics (curly tails, Charlie Brewer, Bobby Garland, etc.) and long line troll. If you are spider rigging you might want to fish a single 1/16 jig tipped with a minnow about 20 inches below a 3/4 oz sinker. Troll at a speed of .8 - 1 mph. If you can't find fish then find fishermen. Crapppie fishermen usually will have a long net standing up in their boat and lots of rods sticking out. They will be moving back and forth over areas that hold fish. Find them, follow them and do what they are doing. If you ask how they are rigged most will happily share that information with you. Remember the number 1 rule. If you are fishing where there aren't any fish, then chances are real good that you won't catch any fish. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks Hotwater, I dont have a good graph yet, just a small in the dash Lowrance that dosent show much. I fished with the crowd in Lick creek the other day and seen a few folks catching a few but I know Gman said the bite had slacked way off.

I only have a 5" graph but it shows structure AND fish. I was gonna recommend that you idle around likely fishing spots with your big motor to "LOOK" for fish on your depth finder before you put out lines. No fish then move to another spot. I have looked for a couple hours before putting out lines. If they aint there then you aint gonna catch 'em.

Lots of your so-called crappie fishermen always go to the same creek and do the same thing over and over. If there isn't any fish moved into the creek then they all go home saying the fish weren't biting. Ive seen that 100 times or more when in fact if they looked for fish then they might have caught them. Atleast if you look for 'em you have tried. Just because you see a lot of boats in an area doesn't always mean that's where the fish are at. I've rode up to where I could watch and sit there a few minutes to see. Ive also asked and heard that they weren't biting. I moved on. Good luck to ya.
