Last year, I learned a lot. For some reason, though, the lesson didn't "take". I came home all fired up, but just couldn't make his method work.

I was back in Florida recently, though, so I booked another lesson. It was awesome. Something "clicked" this time. I've been practicing at least 3-4 days per week since then, and I'm really encouraged. I was a good caster before, but the most recent lesson has made me better. I'm easily casting 60-70' with just one back cast. (Eliminating false casts is something he really focuses on.) I have very few tailing loops, and I'm really feeling the rod load (something I had trouble feeling before.) Accuracy is great. As mentioned in the video, when you're square to your target and keep everything in line, you can't help but cast straight.

If you're ever in the Ft. Myers area, I highly recommend getting a lesson from him.

FWIW, I've had several lessons from some really good casters, but Joe's method fits me better than the others. Joe's method, summarized:

    1) Finger on top grip
    2) Lots of wrist
    3) Closed stance
    4) High back cast
    5) Short, compact casting stroke

I stay pretty much in the SW Desert, yea, I get odd looks all the time. I bank fish for some
Black Crappie they have near here. Otherwise I go to the Gila Wilderness lookin' for Gila trout.
Nice sub-species that live in some small feeder streams so, distance isn't truly necessary, but
accuracy is. Black Creek Canyon is a favorite. Maybe 15 to 20 miles as the crow flies, 3 hours by
Forest Service roads in the mountains

    Thanks for the reply.

I love watching videos like this. Its quite informative. Ive recently upgraded my fishing rod and my casting could also use some upgrade. Ive been practicing in my backyard recently and I cant wait to use my new fishing rod. If anyone is looking to buy a new rod, you should look at this website.

    Hank,

My Dad and I used to fish for those Gila trout. The Gila national forest is one of my favorite places in the world. Put in a lot of miles chasing deer, elk, and tassel eared squirrels over there. Alas, I live in the flat lands of KS now…
