Top water bites are obviously easy to see. For sinking flies, a big bluegill will just about take the rod out of your hands. Learn the “hand twist” retrieve. I posted a YouTube video awhile back.

Ok I'll watch it for sure. I need to learn every technique I can.

Next question. How much luck has everyone had with crappie on a fly rod?

If you search YouTube, the hand twist retrieve is also referred to as the “figure of eight” retrieve. That and stripping the fly in is about all I ever do.

As for crappie, I’ve caught very few on the fly rod, mainly because I haven’t tried. In shallow water, the fly will work well. Just think of it as a light jig and retrieve slowly.
