It's worth about $20. They still sell 'em today-- for about $20.

Got a fiberglass yellow Eagle Claw 5 wt. that always went with me as a backup rod when I went trout fishing. Not worth much as far as $, but works fine as a fly rod. It has a fairly soft action that you have to wait on when casting, but if you get the timing right it will sling the line quite well.

I am the last person to be mistaken for a fly purist, but a popping bug or small gnat on a fly rod for bream in spring is about the most fun you can have with your clothes on. You might want to invest in a cheap(but good) Pfleuger reel and some 5 or 6 wt line and try it. The longer you have it the more the fact your father gave it to you will mean to you. Keep it long enough and it becomes priceless.

It's a fine sport for anyone. I never leave home without a fly rig in my boat.

Those rods were a very slow action rod. This means trying to throw larger flys such as a popper will be very difficult. They are great rods to show beginners how a rod loads do to there extreme slow-soft action but not recommended as a popper flyrod.

It's worth getting to know it, how to cast is easy once you stop thinking about as being difficult. For quick repeatable casting to the same zone they can't be beat.
Put a small popper of the end and just flip it out there ...

They are good rods and good to learn on,foam spiders on top, bully spider let them sink.A martin fly reel and some BPS or other store brand line. The line weight should be on the rod.Use that weight or one size heavier.Watch any casting video by Lefty Kreh and you will be in business.Dont forget crappies love flies too.AND bass, carp, stripers, pike.muskies and of course those trout.
