Default Gonna try something different in fly fishing

Hi, it's Snake. I live in Centreville VA and go out to Burke Lake quite often. Last Sunday must have been fly fishing weekend. There were a lot of people out there trying it. Sorry to say, I'm not that coordinated. Not even going to try. Several months ago I purchased something on the internet, the Bobber with a Brain. One way of using it was to use the actual bobber as the weight and use about a 5 foot leader with a fly attached. Bought some floating fly line and rigged it up. Will test this weekend and let you know if I'm a moron or not. Don't laugh too hard.

I don't know about the brain part but we call that "float & fly". I use that a lot when it is too windy to throw a fly. It is a very popular method for small mouth bass.
As far as fly-casting view a few youtube videos and you may be surprised how fast you pick it up. Another way is to find your local fly-fishing club and see who is giving beginner lessons.

    Good luck

I understand what you're trying to do, but the Bobber with a Brain is meant for bottom fishing. (And it's not even very good at that.) A better option is a simple bubble float like this:

Are you saying you tied the fly line to the bobber? All you need is mono.

Having said that, I'd still recommend getting an inexpensive fly outfit instead. No matter how hard it looks, if you can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time, you can learn the basics in less than an hour. Fly casting is fun, and playing a fish on a fly rod is fun. It's well worth learning.

I taught several kids a year at school after hours each year . 1 hr. casting at plates on the gym floor . 30 min. in a chair outside (understanding wind effect on back cast ) then take to city park (from bank) and see them catch first fish . Nothing to it . I want to see fly fishing stay in MS.I miss teaching the kids but retirement has a way of passing the torch . Always told them it's not how far you cast but fly placement . distance will come with time on water . Name: Video 41 0 00 00-01 (2).jpg

    Thumbs up

Definitely the right way to plant the "seed" for fly fishing fever!! Great youth donation/efforts and photo!! Were they surface or sub-surface victims ...bedding? Looks like a streamer.

Eagle what reel is that blue one in the picture? I have one just like it. Haven’t used it in years. Think I’ll dig it out.

It is an old Martin. An 85 yr. old fellow gave it to me and said it was his dads . The newer models regardless of brands do not have the spring steel quality as these reels . Will check on actual model number in the morning .
