Yeah, and they're more of a "southern thing", too. (The guy I mentioned before is from Louisiana.)
Agreed. I've kind of settled on the loop-to-loop connection (for now, anyway), but I'm always on the lookout for a better option.

looking at purchasing one of tfo lefty signature series or professional series in atleast 9' rod with 8wt line anyone seen any of these rods on the net for a 100.00 bucks or below. Reason I ask it is closeout season on some sights. Thanks, Hey disco I think I might stay with the onehanded rods and master them before I try to jump to a two hander.
Be careful and don't count on it being a "once in a while" thing! Once you start snagging those knot-heads while all of your buddies are still chunkin and winding for bass ... you just might get addicted! I started my son when he was 11 and made a big impact on him. At that age, most don't have the patience to sit around waiting for a bite ... the fly action keeps them busy and catching fish most of the time. I started many years ago with a couple of "Black Beauty" WalMart rods, then moved up a bit from there. My preference and easiest to work with is a 5-6 wt - 9' rod, floating tapered line with a very light leader. Scientific Angler put out a DVD by Larry Dahlberg that would be well worth your investment to get and watch. He shows you virtually everything you need to know. Good luck and keep us posted on your success!
does anyone know anything about "Aleka" fly rods/reels. An ad popped up when surfing the web recently, and they look interesting, prices for a combo set seem fair, but about the only thing I can find out for sure is they are from across the big pond, with a new distribution HQ in PA, and rumor has it a former employee of Sonik (?) fly rod mfg from England started Aleka. Comments stated the Aleka rods/reels look very similar to the Sonik brand, but it appears the Sonik brand is strictly UK. I haven't seen anyone in the US selling that brand anyways.
The reviews on Aleka's website are all positive (big surprise), and found a few forums with some comments, mostly positive, but all from England/UK area. Some like Aleka and some do not, but it seems like fly rod preference is like the old Chevy/Ford/Dodge debate. Whatever suits your personal preference in rod characteristics is what some one recommends. They do have 28 day "free trial" period tho.
I would concur ... a free trial period ... can't go wrong. It's not like we're fishing for Steelhead ... it's just panfish ... if it feels good to you, doesn't matter what brand or price range. I still use my "Black Beauty's" from time to time! :)

My first fly rod, WHAT A BLAST. Stopped by Academy Sports today, not even intending on fishing stuff, looking for paddle clothes.
Anyway, got me a Okuma Tempest 5wt 9' combo. Grabbed some bugs and poppers and minners off the fly rack. The poppers were a blast.
You sir are about to get addicted its great fun to watch that popper get smashed
