If I remember correctly.. A guy I used to see cast netting Tilapia had a cast net with 1 inch mesh and the weights looked larger than the average cast net.. He said the larger mesh helped the net sink faster. He was a tall thin fella, he could throw that big net with ease.

They have the same bones as a Crappie, just bigger. They are easy to fillet, thick skin and big scales. Farm raised are usually about the same size, maybe 1.5 lbs? ..they grow fast.. any bigger and weight gain to food cost ratio makes it less profitable.. at least thats what I heard

Caught while trolling for crappie. Fought like a banshee. I've never caught one in the mouth, my buddie William was soaking the heck out of a bunny butt in Garlic Slabsauce. I think the Garlic Slabsauce is what made him bite IMHO! dono

Beautiful fish too. Nest off my Sea Wall, have real big beds. I've snagged them there but they've always fought there way off the hook.
Had no idea they got this large!

They do use a large mesh net, ive watched they guy at the bait shop making them, but most guys i see arent big, but there are usually several of them working together.
As a result of what ive learned here i think the next one i catch will come home with me.

I watched a small Asian feller cast a net on Jesup and when he cinched it up and started lifting, he could barely get it aboard. Full of large tilapia and crappie too, which he kicked back over the side once he had them on the deck. Some of those fish were very large. Can’t say I’ve ever eaten one. The one I got was at the beginning of the Covid era and the guy fishing next to me was fishing to feed family, 3 had lost their jobs. That fish went home with him and a few of my crappie too. There are some in the river that are so light colored they look like ghosts in the tannic water.

Well i am a bit surprised that Cashman caught that many, assuming they were caught on a hook and line.
But apparently they are vegetarians, which means things like various types of weeds.
And thats where ive caught all the ones ive caught, either in or very close to the weed beds.
But that would mean a different fishing technique, especially for those who prefer trolling.
The guy i mentioned on Youtube who caught 2 was casting on Blugill beds with a hook and crickets, and apparently worms work also.
Ive read where they will attack the eggs on beds, so thats another place you might have some luck, maybe even the best luck.
