    Default Aye Aye, Captain...

is a historic, typically nautical response(favorable), that even non-boater/anglers(even respectful spouses) have heard/used many times. My most recent post(Fish & Chips) summed up the delicacy that many of us have enjoyed over the years = Crispy, fried "tails/fins"Name: 20210425_105215.jpg

Size: 172.6 KB Recently, while making my fish-delivery to my mid-80's neighborhood couple, I offered up that very fact on the value of the scrumptious, crispy tails. Barbara responded that she LOVES 'em but Ralph throws 'em out after his artful filet skills. Ralph, within earshot of this jab responded "our preacher even eats the eyeballs from our saltwater fish we give 'em!!" He says they're the BEST part! I tried hard NOT to let the light-bulb turn on, I really did, but I still had some fresh, uncleaned "candidates" awaiting their turn. I figured, well, the Northerly, frigid boys have their walleyes("eyes"), maybe daily, Sunny Florida can have ours too! If you scan back to the pic, in the middle, on a white square piece of paper towel, you'll see(put your eyes on) the two "pop outs". We don't have any Mt. Everest's to climb here in Florida, but I'm always "In search of"(circa.- Leonard Nimoy). Keeping an open mind(creativity) will often yield the reward of a full livewell! Centuries ago, tomatoes were considered toxic/poisonous, couldn't give away rock shrimp here in Florida, eating poisonous pufferfish(tried one lately?=my favorite), >$20 for Grouper cheeks(delicious), sea nettle(jellyfish) soup[haven't tried yet]- list goes on... For all of the unemployed comedians & pugilistic punsters out there, why not try a "thumbs-up" audition = I'll push the ball 1st- Eye, Eye Captain 2- Guess the eyes have it 3- I only have eyes for you(old folks should remember this song) 4- Eye can't imagine someone making a post like this!!

Always remember, there is no better advice than achieved 1st hand!

Well i have eaten lots of fresh caught Walleyes.
And yes i do prefer them to Crappies.
And ive also had the cheek meat.
Very good, but not sure worth the trouble for what you get.
Id sooner another filet than those.
Ive also tried the much talked about fins.
Again, not worth the bother at least for me.

Interesting post, have to remember them next time out. I think we’ve all learned to try something new with outdoorsy entrees. I was lucky enough to be able to join in on a Thursday evening game cook and clay shoot once with elk, quail, goose, and several other delights including Halibut. Lots of yummy that day.

First time i ever heard about eating the fins was a couple years ago watching a video of Shotgun Red cooking Blue gills.
He went on and on over how good they were and how he and his siblings fought over them.
I cooked up a few just like he did, and while i enjoyed the fish there wont be any fighting over the fins coming from me.
Just pass me that bag of chips and you can eat all the fins. lol
One thing i do feel a bit guilty about is not making fish stock from the carcasses.
Freezer space is the issue for me unless i would use it right away.
