I’d walk the beach throwing good sized swim baits and such for a snook chasing bait shallow near dawn and dusk. I’ve never done it but have heard enough about it to want to do it myself.

The pier may still be closed. Hurricane tore it up a couple years back.

I lived in Manatee county for 20 years before moving to MS. Before you go fishing, be sure and read up on the catch rules. They can be quite complex (and they change somewhat frequently). Surf fishing is rarely done there - just isn't a lot of fish in the surf itself. However, wading the flats is very big. It doesn't have to be expensive. Just a medium-action spinning outfit, a very light lead sinker (just enough to help cast), an 18" or so length of a little heavier mono leader (I used to use 20lb Trilene Big Game), a medium sized bronze hook (I liked the size 1 Owner Mutu Light Circle) and a bucket of live shrimp. Fish only when the tide is moving good - you're wasting your time fishing at slack tide. Wade to where the water is between knee and thigh deep. No need to go deeper. Good luck. If you want to spend the money, I still know of a few guides working that area that might have an opening.

Just keep in mind trout, redfish, and snook are still closed on this side.

I'm not familiar with surf or wade fishing over there. But you may be able to pick up some whiting and such in the surf or find some mangrove snapper along rock piles/seawalls/bridges.
