    Default mid week report

Got up a little late this morning but to a clear sky and little wind. It looked too nice to let go without going to the lake. I managed to avoid the school busses and made it to the ramp. Only one other boat trailer in the lot, but 3 air boats were there getting ready to launch to do weed control.

My plan was to pick up where I left off the last time I was here. I head over to the bay only to find that the wind was stronger than I wanted. I point the boat towards the main lake with the plan to position the boat to let the wind move me a long. But a rod goes off. I look at the chart and see that I am by a drop off in the lake. I land a nice size fish and decide to work the drop off. It proves to be a good idea. I put another nice size fish in the box. I see another boat working the area as well. I set up for a circle pattern to see if I can pull a few more. The rod goes off again and I start to work the fish in towards the net. It comes to the surface, sees the net ,shakes its head NO, and is off the hook. First LDR ( long distance release) of the day. I continue to work the pattern for awhile but the wind is picking up and control is starting to be an issue. I check and I have 5 nice fish in the box. I would have liked one more, but it is what it is. I point the boat towards the ramp. I start to bring the rods in, taking my time. That is when a rod goes off and number 6 makes it to the box. That gives me two good meals, one for the table, one for the freezer. That works for me, besides thats all I feel like cleaning at a time.

Great report and nice pics. I have a lot to learn about trolling for crappie. I plan to spool some rods with 6lb and some with 4lb. I may try a couple of rods with floats and some without. I plan to use roadrunners with curly tail baits in 1/16 and 1/8oz weights. If anyone would like to help out with my setup it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Jeepjock, I pull 6 rods behind my boat. all rods are set with 6# test line. I have 3 rods on each side of the boat, one 6 ft rod, one 9 ft rod and one 12 ft rod . I use floats on all lines so that I can see where they are at and how they are reacting. I try to use the same size jig heads on all rods ( 1/16 oz or 1/8 oz ). I set bobber stops on all the lines at 4 ft, 6 ft and 8 ft. When I set out the rods I do my first set up with bobbers set at : the 6 ft rods = 4ft depth, the 9 ft rods = 6 ft depth , and the 12 ft rods = 8 ft depth. ( the lake I fish in is 8 to 10 ft deep ). I use light color tails on one set of rods and dark color tail on the other set. When the fish show me what they want, I change the other rods over to that set up. some times I will drag a crank bait off the back of the boat just to see if anything takes it. ( some mice surprises happen doing that ). I seems to work for me.

I can't thank you enough for the great info. I have been unable to run a boat by myself for a while but due to medical science I am now a bionic man. I am so looking forward to meeting everyone at the slab fest. Can't wait to try some crappie trolling. I will probably start out on Lake Poinsett in Cocoa, Lake Washington in Melbourne and Lake Harney near Mims. Looking forward to fishing lake Monroe at the slab fest. Again, thank so very much for your detailed trolling set up info. My confidence is so high right now that I am researching ways to cook crappie. LOL. It will be great fun to post some reports. Tight Lines.
