Default My first fish of the season

I took the time this week to change the boat back over to crappie fishing. Put all the long rods back on board, changed over the tackle boxes and set up the rod holders. After testing the trolling motor I felt that I was ready to go. Then I remembered the long handled landing net. I'll be needing that to help land those slabs that I'll be catching !

I forgot to set the alarm clock and got up a little later than I wanted. But I made the coffee , hooked up the boat and headed out for my first crappie trip of the season. I got to the ramp a little bit after sun up, not bad for a late start, and there were 3 other trailers in the lot. The lake was calm and the morning was beautiful. I headed out.

I was planning to work the sign line, just outside of the "slow speed zone". This area has always been good for me. I shut down the big motor and dropped in the trolling motor. There was a slight wind that helped move me along. I started to set the rods out.

Last year I played with some different set ups on the rods with mixed results. Some of the rods still were set up that way. I poured myself a cup of coffee and set about putting out the rods, changing back to the old setup. I am thinking about trying something else this year, but not yet.

As I was adjusting the trolling motor I saw one of the rods move. Fish on ?? I lifted the rod, no net needed on this one.

The first crappie of this season was on board, all 5 inches of it. But the skunk was off the boat. Only better thinks to come. I adjust the rods and my course. I am only working a small area today just to work the bugs out for the new season so I stayed close to the ramp area. But the rod goes off again.

I pick up the first ones twin. It's still action. My time is almost up so I turn the boat and start to head back to the ramp. A rod goes off, another small one. I start to bring it in just as one of the long rods takes on a big bend. Big fish on ! I do a quick release on the small fish and grab the long rod. I land a nice 11 inch crappie. Nice way to end the day. With only one keeper in the boat, I let it go and head in. But I forgot to take it's picture. Oh well, next time.

Until then, tight lines and full nets to all. See you on the water.

    Jim

another good day at the office !

A good first trip Jim. Nowhere to go but up from here. Been thinking about my long rods too. Now if someone will turn the fan and sprinkler off when I get time off, I’ll be in great shape. Looking forward to some cooler shots Jim.
