    Default First time fishing Florida

Well made it down finally. Arrived in Astor Saturday afternoon. Rented a house on a canal right off St. John’s about a mile or so from lake George. House has a boat lift so went right away to put in boat. Greeted by not only game wardens but also sheriff’s dept boat and a coast guard boat right outside landing. Luckily they were busy with other boats and I made my way back to the house. Tried pulling jigs a little in the river late that afternoon but it was still crazy. Went early this morning and pulled cranks for a few hours with minimal luck. Did ride to lake George to take a quick look. Caught several huge bluegill this afternoon late. Found a deep hole on the river (35 foot) and it was stacked with fish as we came in right before dark. Assuming those were crappie. Will give them a try in the morning. What works best for crappie here this time of the year and would you recommend we stay in the river or venture to lake George? Thanks for any help. Sure is pretty down here.

Curly tails & paddle tails in Tennessee shad, acid rain, monkey milk, parrot, black/blue, all w/chartreuse will get the job done long-lining...1/16, 3/32, good area your in, would try that deep hole, but if it doesn't produce, we've had some rain lately that have some specks transitioning to the lakes off the channels, good luck, a few yrs back Walley Marshall shot a video on lake George in June & tore-them-up! He was single poling a Slablious paddle tail...

Yes they (brim/bluegill) are big down there, I’ve been going down three years and will be for years to come (hope the good lord allow it) . I go in the Welaka area north of lake George mostly but it’s all a great fishery.

Used to go down each year in late 70's and 80's when I was Bass-obsessed. Lots of great memories. Stayed at Blair's Jungle Den resort. Shame it's closed now.
Keep after them. And if you get a chance, boat to DeLeon State Park for the U-Cook at your table breakfast at the Old Gristmill.

Tried live bait for bass today. Bait shop only had 4 big shiners left. My normal luck. Took those with about 5 small bream that we had caught the day before. My wife lost a monster. Caught one probably 3 lbs, a huge gar and a big mud fish. Had a ball. Do me some shiners about 30 minutes away so going to get more tonight.
