From my training as a food inspector way back when, they are small veins and are perfectly edible, some fish such as blue gill and crappie are prone to parasites (tiny black dots) scattered all through the flesh which are primarily safe for human consumption, the red larvae that are coiled up can be removed and you can still eat the fish. Results We ate them I'm still alive on Sunday . I will say that it stands up like hair growing some longer some not . Fwc got a pic as well. I had one fish that was long probably 1 1/2 lb but he looked really thin?

Maybe it's just me but....
I notice then on nearly every bream fillet but only notice it on cold water crappie...?? By mid to late March, I don't see it anymore.
