Sounds like another successful day of testing on the water! Can't complain when the drag gets to scream once in a while. Love it.
It was 51 deg according to my truck as I pulled up to the boat ramp. I was number 5 as near as I could tell from the trailers in the lot. As I backed down to the ramp, one boat was heading out and another boater pulled into the lot. Active but not busy at the ramp this morning. As I was coming back from parking the truck, The guy launching asked how I did last week. He said that he only had 4. I had managed 6. We agreed it was a hard day last week and wished each other good luck today.
The sun was coming up as I moved closer to my starting point. The water was 65 deg and there was no wind . I started to put the rods out.
I was not alone out here. There were at least 4, no 5 boats around the starting spot. I pointed the boat towards the happy hunting grounds and got me my coffee. I worked the sign line in 8 ft of water ( along with everyone else ) all the way to the end of the run. Nothing !!
I turn the boat to the north. Going to give it a try closer in. Let's see what 6 ft of water will give me.
But on this run I change my set up. Half of the rods are running with my new setup idea the other half go back to the old way. The rods start to go off. ( old set up ) . I run to the end and make the turn. Only the old setup rods bent on that run. I reset all the rods back to the old way.
I keep getting rods to bend. Now if only I can get some size to them.
I finally put a keeper in the box ! I get a few more throw backs then my luck starts to change and the fish start to get bigger. Looks like I will be taking home dinner after all.
One of the back rods goes off and makes a wild swing to the back of the boat ! The reel starts to scream ! I grab the rod and there is something with size on the other end fighting back. It makes two or three runs before giving in and coming to the boat. I grab the net and work him closer. It's a slab crappie ! He comes on board. 14 " and fat ! I work the area making a few more runs.
The wind has picked up and so have the waves. I point the boat towards the ramp and work my way back . 10 fish are in the box that will make the ride home.
