    Default Lake Poinsett this morning...

Well I headed out to Poinsett this morning to try a little crappie fishing. I haven't been there in about a month as I normally bass fish. The last time out I was just totally disgusted in both lake Winder and Poinsett as our corrupt FWC had nuked all of the remaining Bulrush that was left in both lakes, I mean all of it, that was the only vegetation left in the lake as everything else had been destroyed from the years of their total nuking. The water quality now is the worse as I have ever seen in the last 30+ yrs, it at best has about 2" visibility and is the darkest brown as any water I've seen. And guess who is at the ramp when I get back, you guessed it, the army of spray boats out nuking some more. This state is by far the worst in the country for managing its natural resources, the condition of our waterways from the lagoons, to the red tide in the gulf and ocean, and to what own they have done with the over spaying of our inland lakes is down right criminal. It's very sad to see what has become of our state because of their greed and money.

I'm not a biologist. I tend to agree with you. Chemicals can't be good. They spray here on Griffin too. But I do see that they need to keep the canals open cause otherwise they would just get growed thick over. In my opinion, they need to harvest that grass and just pull it out of there. I dono, maybe use it for fertilizer. But who am I to say.

Thanks for sharing, makes one think.

For many years, a few of us would travel to Santee Cooper from MD. to crappie/striper fish=hiring a guide 1st day(figure pattern/location)>remaining rest of week...doing our thing. Then SC FWA had the idea to introduce sterile(non reproductive) grass eating carp(would grow to 20+ lbs. to help eradicate the turbine blocking problem caused by the weeds. Within 1 - 2 yrs. MOST of the grass was eliminated, so was the hiding/spawning habitat for fry/predators AND most importantly impacted the fabulous fishing that locals and out of state fisherman/clients would stimulate SC economy. License fees(including more expensive out of staters, lodging, restaurant/bars, fish camps, guide fees, bait/tackle shops, Wally world runs etc. were impacted. High-profile and second best guides were greatly affected by this "fix". The booked up guides were now sitting idly @fish camps, coffee shops, bait shops hoping to be hired. Fishing was so poor, we stopped going, but luckily back in '71 managed by personal best while single-pole casting the "slave canal" weighing in at a whopping 3 lbs. 2 oz.!! After numerous town hall, political representative contacts etc., SC decided to replant grasses. The fishing subsequently re-kindled but it ultimately swung our pocketbooks/quarry northward to the infamous Lake Erie smallmouth fishery and my personal best smallie @6 lb. 2 oz. caught single poling 4" tube baits in 30 - 40 fow. The dreaded zebra mussel, gobies were the target of concern back then, but now they are catching 8 lb. smallies!!
In summary, chemical remedies, pulling(??) remedies can have their consequences.

They did the same thing in the private lake across the lake from my house. My son used to get my wild shiners there and the fishing was great. Then the lake lot owners complained about the weeds messing up their skiing and chemicals cost to much so the state recommended grass carp. Well no more grass and no more shiners. Fishing went down hill big time. There are small private lakes around here where land owners were asking bow hunters to shoot the carp. BTW that is a lot of fun used to shoot a lot of regular carp. Don
I don't mind sharing where I caught my fish.
Most was caught in their mouth.
