    Default Silver Lake - 11/11/2014

I was originally going to visit Lake Tarpon today but instead I decided to save some windshield time and stay a little closer to home and try out Silver Lake. I imagine there are about 100 Silver Lakes around, so to clarify I was on Silver Lake at the northern edge of Hernando County, I-75 crosses over it around mile marker 307.

This was my first time on this lake so I didn't really know what to expect. I have done numerous web searches and can find very little about fishing on this lake. I put in around 8:30 this morning and was surprised at how many boats were around, perhaps it being a holiday for some added to the traffic. I started off trolling 4 lines behind my motorized kayak, one had a beetle spin, another had a small crank bait, and the other two had one each soft plastic jig and maribou jig in various colors. I ended up with about a half dozen crappie, none of which were big enough to keep. The biggest was just a hair over 10", the rest were 8-9". Most were caught in about 6-7 feet of water, water temp was 67F. I could not find a consistent color that they wanted, in fact I don't think I caught more than 1 fish per color.

Anyways, it was a fun day of trolling, not sure if I'll visit this lake again anytime soon though.

Hey Jersh, I used to fish and camp at Silver lake. I lived about 1/2 way between Silver Lake and Brooksville off of Hwy 50. I mainly bass fished there but we did troll there from time to time and had some pretty decent luck. Back then, about the only jig I used was a Red Head, Green body and Yellow tail Hal Fly. I always called it Christmas Tree. I did pretty good on some Blue/Black Hal Fly's also. Never caught any huge fish but we did catch some 1 lb to 1 1/4 lb crappie. Haven't been there since the late 90's but I would imagine there are still some good fish in there. Let us know how you do if you go back.

I fished it a couple years ago. I only caught one crappie about 11" and I fished for a good 4-5 hours.
