Cool Basic 'Rules' for Specks ...

Hey y'all ... I'm hoping to load the boat w/ specks in the next week or two, but I don't know much about finding them and then I don't know much about catching them ... so what are the basic rules, like depth, cover, structure, moonphase, water temps, season, bait, lures, I'll appreciate anything y'all care to share ...

real interested in moonphase especially ....

    Default Florida Specks

Some are being caught. Fairly slow in most of the area.
What part of Fl. do you plan to fish?

    Yeah,
Ihave noticed that Woodruff had been given a good report in the Orlando Sentinel a few days ago.
Don't know anyone that has fished it lately.

    Default Woodruff

Prefished woodruff last sunday and caught 40, biggest 10 fish weighed 16.2. Not too shabby. Florida crappie association is having a tournament their this saturday, should be some pretty big fish weighed in. If you want to catch alot of crappie though visit Orange lake in between ocala and gainsville on us 301. You can catch your limit by 9am, really been catching alot of 1.8 to 2lb fish their too.....anyway Orange lake and Woodruff really good right now. Ocala forest lakes fish are really skinny Bryant, lou, kerr, jumper, etc. Just not eating or something. If anyone want to know about the Crappie USA and florida crappie association tour. email me at [email protected]

    Default Orange Lake

Would love to hear more about Orange.
We made several trips to Orange in the 70's in Feb for a week of fishing
    and R&R.
    Later started fishing Big "O".
Last time I checked on Orange it was dry.
Sure used to enjoy going to the Yearling for steak.

Yea, water came way up during the hurricanes. Florida game and fish elec. spring test said Lochloosa had some of the biggest and most numerous amount of specks in the whole state. But when Orange lake came up I think they all migrated to it. You can still catch them on Loochloosa but theres nothing like Orange lake . Any color jig ( I troll myself, sometimes spider rig) anywhere, although the best spot for me has been in between mikes fish camp and marjorie rawlings park boat ramp .

I'm not from Florida but have a question you guys might help me with. I understand that in Louisiana the specks are larger in the northern half of the state. The reason given was that hurricanes dump salt water in the southern lakes which causes fish kills. Do hurricanes have this effect on Florida waters?
