I was out about a year or so ago (I haven't been on here for a while, so hello!) and I was walking along dragging jig. There is a lake nearby and it is nominally fed by a small creek. That was where I was. I have no idea how deep the water was and I was really just messing around. I haddn't caught anything. Didn't want to go home empty handed...

There are gar in our area. Not the big alligators. They got fished out years ago. There are still Florida and spotted gar though. I obviously wasn't paying attention and had maybe 12 foot of the of the 20 or so I keep on the cane pole. I don't know what kind of dinofish it was but it hit that jig and ran.

All I could do was follow along and let out line. It stopped to chew as they are want to do and I slowly took in line to set the hook. I got it close to taught and set it. Granted this was all new to me. I had never caught one before with this set up.

I guess he figured it all out and dashed away. So I'm following the thing and it headed straight for weeds. Smart fish. It stopped and wrapped the line up. I don't think these fish are brilliant by any means but this was the most brilliant fish I have dealt with. I felt a big tug and my line broke.

I went home empty handed with this weird tale.

The Quint in me tells me to go back. They have dull, lifeless eyes... I better go get m'DVD.
