    Default Goin' Fishin'

I used to work at a tackle shop not far from a 13,000+ acre Corps of Engineers Reservoir and we had a good base of regular customers plus lots of periodic customers who kept us busy. We got to know many of the locals well over time, since ours was one of the last stops to buy bait before the lake. Fishermen would also stop by to hang out, kill time, or check where the fish were biting for the next time they had the chance to go. It was a regular meeting place.

Most Sundays, a pair of retired guys who fished together often, would roll into the shop between 6:30 to 7:30 AM, buy some minnows, tackle, and drinks, then head off to the lake. One morning the guys pulled up, gathered a few minnow buckets from the trunk of the Pontiac, then came in the store to load up. They chatted with the store owner as I pointed out a spot on the lake map where they might try their luck. They loaded the buckets into the trunk, then walked around to either side of the car to go fishing...only the keys weren't in the car. They knew the keys were used to open the trunk, so they must have accidentally locked the keys in the trunk (oops!). They double and triple checked the floorboards, walked around beside & behind the car checking the ground and under the car. Still no keys. They came back in the store to explain what happened and to see if they could borrow some tools to remove the back seat, so they might be able to get the keys out of the trunk.

Well, after about 90 minutes with much cussing & sweating, they finally managed to wrestle the bench seat and back out of the old Pontiac. They borrowed a flashlight to hopefully find where the keys had gone. Looking through the small holes behind the seat into the trunk, one held the light while the other poked and rooted around with a stick searching around the tackle boxes & buckets in the trunk for another 15-20 minutes. No keys were found. After two hours of searching to find the keys, they gave up and decided to just go ahead and call the locksmith. They started closing the car doors to wait on the locksmith, and there were the keys, still hanging from the driver's side door lock, where they failed to check. We all fell out laughing. The shop owner and I felt so bad for them, we changed out their minnows for some fresh ones, gave them a few cold drinks for their trouble, and wished them good luck as they drove off to go fishing.

We have all had moments like that. Like when my wife is looking for her glasses. They are on your head.
