By accident on his way to the cooler to get another beer, a friend kicked the side of the bucket as he walked behind it, and the vibrations made the rod tip look like the other guy had a bite. We all pointed at the rod tip and called his name ( he was busy talking & not paying attention), so he jumped up, scrambled to the bucket, and violently snatched the rod back, like he was setting to hook on a monster fish. Of course there was no fish, but now it was a game. Every time he'd start talking, somebody else would kick the bucket and make his rod tip bounce. Of course, motormouth would scramble over to his rod and snatch it back, like he was expecting a 50 pound catfish on the other end. Only there was no fish.

He walked away from his gear to answer nature's call, and another one of the guys tied a 16 ounce glass coke bottle to his line & tossed it out into the river. Once motormouth got back to the group, somebody bumped his bucket again, but this time when he set the hook, the rod started bucking and pulling back. I don't know if you've ever tied a glass bottle to a line and tried to reel it back through a current, but it pulls like a real catfish. Motormouth eased down to the water's edge with his giant landing net. We all fell out laughing when he reeled up that bottle.
    That’s funny right there!

No place like Vegas to catch strippers!

I've snagged a full wardrobe over the years including shoes, socks, pair of jeans, a few t-shirts, swimtrunks, hats, a glove, a NorthFace jacket and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. Landed a lounge chair with the fish that wrapped my up in it.

Weirdest thing lately was a 2 headed turtle. My wife and I were at our favorite bluegill spot last Saturday morning, just slaying them. She hooks something big, turns out to be a turtle. Got him right in the mouth. About 20 minutes later I see a turtle come up right behind my bobber and then go under. I was too late trying to reel away from it and I had him on the line. As I pulled him in I thought he was hooked in the mouth, but then I saw his head straining in another direction. In the low light it sure looked like a 2 headed turtle. It took a couple more seconds to realize I'd snagged him in the front foot.

My FIL and BIL and I were pulling an all nighter at a heated fishing dock one cold winter night. The fishing was slow and the fire was going good in the pot bellied stove used to heat the dock. it was warm and cozy and around 1 in the morning my FIL who was known as Red dozed off with his rod in a rod holder on the railing of the dock. There were several ducks around the dock and occasionally one would slip in under the side of the dock to eat the dead minnows that were usually floating on the surface inside the fishing well. On this night one of the ducks had slipped in and was swimming around inside. My BIL decided to pull a joke on my FIL and reached over and hit his pole that was in the rod holder makin the rod tip jerk up and down. Then he yelled out "Red you have a bite". This startled Red from a sound sleep and he grabbed the rod and jerked. The same time he jerked the rod the duck swam by and when Red jerked the rod the line got tangled around the duck. After trying to get away and splashing around in the well the duck managed to fly up into the dock. Now we had a very mad terrified duck flopping and running all over the place on our hands and it was total mayhem until we finally captured the duck and got it untangled. The duck jumped back in the water and swam back out. We didn't catch any fish but the story of Red and the duck lives on.

I had a trotline set in the river one day and it came a big rain and I couldn't get to the line to take it up for a couple of days due to the high water and debris. I finally got back to take it out and when I reached down and grabbed it the line was surging hard. I thought I had a really big flathead so I started easing my way down the line and the strong surges continued. The water was still muddy from the rains and when something Huge broke water several hooks down the line all I could tell was it was really big. As I got closer I saw a large round dark object with a cross hatched pattern on the back that looked like a turtle shell. I thought that this had to be a world record snapping turtle and was trying to figure what I was going to do with it when I got a little closer look at it I saw that it was not a turtle. I had hooked a kids wading pool. It must have washed in with the high water. It had a checkerboard pattern on it and was covered in moss and looked lust like a big turtle shell. The current was causing the pool to pull against the line which was making it feel just like a big fish.

I was bass fishing on lake Sharon Harris in North Carolina one morning and was "walking the dog" with a big Zara Spook in the back of a cove. I noticed a large owl sitting in a tree next to the water. Suddenly the owl dive bombed the big top water lure and managed to hook himself in the foot. He just grabbed the lure and flew up and lit on the bank. He did not panic or attempt to fly off. I eased up to where he landed with the trolling motor and got out of the boat and he still just sat there. I got close enough that I was able to reel down to the lure and I pushed against it with the rod and the hook came out. The owl just sat there for a moment and then flew back up onto the same tree he was sitting on. I guess he thought the Spook was a mouse. Surprisingly he seemed nonchalant about the whole thing.

When we were kids,10-12, we were fishing from the back with rods and reels. My friend pulled back to cast and when she came forward, she drug a game warden out of the bushes by the lip screaming like a banshee. It was really funny for all but the game warden.

The funniest thing I ever caught was a fish! Wait, let me tell you the story.

A few of us had parked our folding chairs on the rocky shore of a small lake in Massachusetts (I was in the Army stationed at Fort Devens). It was early evening and we were out for catfish. I baited my hook, sent the cast out into the lake and sat down to enjoy the peace and quiet. Not too long and my rod tip started twitching. I got up, grabbed the rod and started reeling in slowly. I felt the line go tight and I set the hook. As I reeled in I got to my snelled hook and while there was no fish, there was a monofilament line wrapped around it. I grabbed the lines coming from the lake and started pulling it in, hand over hand. Before too long a small catfish emerged firmly hooked. I continued pulling in the other line and I was surprised to see a fishing rod with a Zebco 202 dragging up the beach. The rod was an inexpensive Walmart type and the Zebco still reeled, so it could not have been in the water long. I guess someone had the rod baited and sitting on a dock or something else when the small catfish took the bait, got hooked and took off with the rod and all.

Back when I was in college, I fished big marabou streamers at night, using 20 pound line. It was the best way to catch really large trout. At one hole that held a monster that I had hooked and lost when he wrapped me around a tree root, I got a terrific hit. My line was ripped off the reel like never before. I was picturing this huge trout, but after about 40 feet of line had been stripped, there was the loud splash of a beaver slapping the water with his tail. Fortunately, he hook straightened and I didn't have to mess with him.

I caught this large freshwater snail. I have caught three or four of them in the past few years while fishing my DT6 lures against rip-rap.
