A few years back, I had the itch to try out a new combo I'd bought the day before, but the local spot I frequent was very busy, so I headed out to a state park that I knew had a few ponds that were sometimes productive. A half hour later I was walking from the parking lot to the pond with only my new combo and a worm spinner on it-no tackle, no live bait. I was more interested in seeing how the 'new toy' worked than catching fish. A group of 4 'good ole boys' were at what appeared to be the prime spot, and they let me know that in 4 hours and 2 -6 packs the only thing biting was the mosquitos. I waved and walked past them to a small pier about 30 feet away. I had never seen this pond before, and stood there a few seconds thinking that it was a pretty little 5 acre pond, kind of a pleasant surprise.
Cast out, being new it went out pretty far. Cool, I thought.. Started retrieving the worm spinner, and BAM- fish on! Few seconds later, I'm reaching down and lipping a 16" bass, feeling pretty good about it.
The good ol boys have just enough of a buzz going on to react like I'd just landed a new world record. One came over to me- "That's just not right-it aint right..We been here 'bout all morning and you get this!" What his buddies were saying I cant repeat in a family story.
Thought about it for a second, asked Mr 'it aint right' to take a quick picture. Thanked him, released the fish, smiled, and walked back to my truck. Bit my lip hard as I backed up, pretending not to hear what they were saying. After I was out of sight, I pulled over and had a good laugh. Went to another pond and had a surprisingly normal slow fishin day.
