Trust me as they sometimes say bigger is better You can see the same stuff but only much better with the bigger screen however I am sure with practice you can pick out the things on the 797 with ease buy one you will be glad you did

The 797 has a 640 X 480 screen vs the 997's 480 X 800
The 797 has only one card slot vs dual card slots for the 997 which means you can run a map card and record at the same time.
The 797 has 455 khz for side scan vs the 997 has 455 khz and 800 khz side scan.
Both can be bought with the built in map package, the NVB option.
I went with the 997 for the larger screen and dual card slots.
