I replied to this earlier today, however it did not post soooo....161 Humminbird. I use one myself and it dowes all I need it to do. Not pricey, the gps is equal to my E-trex and the locator does a good job as well.

What is a decent GPS or Combo unit for under $500 or do they even make one for under $500?
Thanks in advance for the advice guys!

Yep. Good little unit for the price. I think Walmart had them for about $230 recently. For less than $500 you can also get a, I think it's a Humminbird 560. My brother-in-law just got one & he likes it. The only thing I don't like about his unit is you can't update it & manage your waypoints on the computer like mine. I would check out the 700 series humminbirds. Check out www.jandhproducts.com . :DOriginally Posted by EDDY CREEK BANDIT

Several good units out there now that are less than $500. Some things to think about when choosing
1. Want to get as high a resolution as you can.
2. need to be able to get upgrades from computer
3. save/store waypoints on seperate media (like seperate SD card for various lakes).
4. Do you want mono or color (I kick myself for not getting color sooner)
5. Do you possibly want to have seperate units. I have hand held GPS that I can take with me when doing scouting or when in somebody eles's boat.
Just some things to think about. I have the H'bird 797 and considering adding H'bird 785.
I highly recommend waht ever you choose as unit of choice check with Three Rivers Marine Electronics. Great people and great customer service.. none better.

I already have a hand held, but I wanted something better. Thanks for the info guys I'll check into those you mentioned.
I'm cheap, and I don't care about recording my trip on sonar and playing it back at home on the computer.
I bought a garmin 178 gps sounder off ebay, new in box for 235.00 and overall am pretty happy with the unit. The only thing I cared about was being able to add maps for the lakes I fish. Can do with the Garmin, and it seems to be a really decent unit.
Garmin has impressed me enough that I just ordered a 160C unit for the front of the boat. Not a high end unit, but should be good enough.

How do you go about putting all the maps you want on a 595C? There's no card slot right?Originally Posted by DTG
The FishFinder 595c has a card slot on top - not always seen in the advertisement pics. It uses the Gold and premium HotMaps and Charts.
595c is a good unit. still have one on front but run 997 on console
