You are correct on the water conditions contributing to the setting numbers of the contrast and sensitivity of the helix unit.
I’m normally around 50% on both and will adjust according to the water conditions. Dirty water, agitated(wind blown) water and hard water(still/clear water) all have factors that effect the return picture. It seems I’m always messing with the settings to get the pic to “pop” and more understandable. Don’t worry about the settings but rely on the screen to show the best pic available. Also the depth of the water has a factor that will change the view on screen.
Most of my experience is fresh water and I’m sure brackish or tidal water has its on influences.
Here’s a screen shot from this weekend that had high winds and really had the water soft and full of air(agitated). You can see the air bubbles in the pic.
