You could always check your meat thermometer with ice to see how close it is to being right.
Has anybody used a digial meat thermometer to check water temp to determine offset? Work ok?

Most suggest to check with boiling water. Which works great for cooking temps. Using ice will check its accuracy on the lower end of the scale

Remember that the temp displayed on a sonar unit is surface temp (where the xducer is) ... and not necessarily at the water depth the fish are at ...

My Livescope tdx & Hook 7 tdx never have the same temp reading. They're usually off by 2-3deg from each other. Both are on the trolling motor, and about 1ft apart.
I rarely pay attention to the temp diffs between them and just figure the real temp is somewhere between the two.
I'm curious as to why you think you need a (near) 100% accuracy in the surface temp ?? Like Rickie says, "that" temp is not necessarily the temp where the fish are .... which could be a few degrees to quite a few degrees different, depending on depth of the fish, than what you're reading close to the surface.

I’ve never found the temp to be a determining factor while fishing any way. It’s nice to look at, and may figure into the equation, but I’m not sure how. I know it does give me a good excuse when I go home empty handed. The water was just too cold or hot. Lol.

Thats how you calibrate it, yeah. But I dont see the need, beyond adjusting so all of your units read the same temp so you don't confuse yourself. I dont care if its 61 or 63 degrees at the surface, just 3 feet down its much cooler.
Mine all read different. I do like to see surface temp although I know it doesn’t make a difference to my fishing.
