Doesn’t the trolling motor have that ability built in to it.

I use the heck out of the jog feature on my Terrova with the heading sensor. If I spotlock to far from the brushpile/school of fish I can jog forward, left, right, back.. it is pretty slick indeed.

I use the jog feature to good effect when working a dock in the wind. Wind blowing at a dock I can be on the back of the boat shooting. And jog the position around the dock. With the older trolling motor that was a two person game

The TM itself only has GPS ... which calculates Course (direction of travel) ...

With HB GPS —> Course (direction of travel) can only be determined when the vessel is moving faster than 0.6mph - OR - after the vessel has moved far enough to determine the vessel actually moved ...

Heading (bow orientation) does not calculate “direction of travel” ... Heading shows vessel orientation (of which way the bow is pointing) by the Heading Sensor puck’s magnetic compass calculating ”degrees difference” from Earth’s magnetic North ...

So does the spot lock not work correctly unless you have a heading sensor?

Works fine and will spot lock without the heading sensor. Just will not be able to use the Jog feature.
