    Default Black box

The livescope instructions are not very clear on the best location of the black box. My concern is, will rain on the unit causing issues if I mount it on my deck or should I mount it in my rod box with no ventilation and may have over heating issues. I would love to know what most users are doing with their black box.
    Thanks, John

Like you I was not sure where to install so finally mounted mine under front deck platform close to graph and put a battery disconnect switch on front deck also to kill the power when moving, no environmental issues so far but it is protected from direct rain and does get descent ventilation. Would suggest to install the box where you can see the LED status light for blink codes.

Mine may not be installed in the correct place but been installed two years now with no issues. I aired on the side of caution because of the cost of the unit, repair or potential warranty claim.

Bolted mine to the rail of the pontoon. Completely exposed. Haven't had a problem yet...knock on wood.

First thing I noticed about the Black Box is that it looks like a "heat sink" with all those cooling vanes. It's supposed to be able to handle temps from 5deg F. to 158deg F. .... and is "waterproof" to 3ft for a short time (& rain).

My situation is a little different than most, as I live in an apt complex. I remove the Garmin & Hook units, Black Box, and batteries, along with my fishing equipment every time I bring the boat home. I remove the Livescope transducer when I've got it put away for the Winter (well, not "put away", but the waterproof boat cover on it and a tarp on top of that). My Black Box sits on the front deck, roughly dead right from the seat pedestal. The battery I use for the Garmin & the Livescope system sits in the alcove between the front deck & console.

I wouldn’t worry about it over heating. It is designed like some car audio amps I’ve seen. Mine is located under the console.

Thank each one of you for your response, and each one of you have great suggestions but I have decided to go a little different way. I have a recessed area for the trolling motor foot control for witch I don’t use, so I am mounting the black box in that area and building a cover that sets flush to the deck over that area. This should prevent any issues with either rain or heat.
    Thanks for all your suggestions
