Default Looking to buy spot lock trolling motor

I'm in the market for a new spot lock trolling motor for my 2001 javelin venom 17. The current factory motor has 44 pounds of thrust which does ok on speed one or two unless its windy. But if it is then I find myself having to raise the speed to hold my position but then its extremely hard to control. I'm looking at the minnkota since I have humminbird electronics but doubt I will ever go with the Ipilot link. Question is would I be ok with a 12 volt 55 pound thrust or should I add a battery and go with 80? Also I do plan on getting a down Imaging unit for the bow in the future so I was wondering about getting a trolling motor with the built-in transducer or is that something that would be better just being bought separate and saving the money. Any help in this matter would be appreciated

Minn kota has a page that will get you to the correct trolling motor.
I used there web app and it worked great.
    Here’s a link to it.

I personally would go with a seperate transducer.

If you are used to the foot pedal I would look at the ultrex 80 lb. You would love it. Built in DI or can add your transducer separately.

Some don't mind using the remote but the foot pedal on the terrova and ulterra don't have the same feel and response.

I had a 12 volt 55lb on an 18.5 foot Stratos dual console. It would move it around really well. If I remember correctly it would move the boat at 2.0 mph according to the gps. No problems in the wind or current

I was looking at the terrova 12-volt 55 lb thrust, that way I could use a pedal or the remote. If I wanted to push or pull jigs I can just set a course and not have to worry about it unless I see an obstruction. Just wasn't too sure on the voltage however. I was looking at the 12 volt versus 24 thinking that if I had a 24 volt system I could hold a set speed without as much load. Probably just rambling here but my mind is telling me that with a 12-volt system I will have to use say setting 4 to maintain the same speed as I would with 80 lb of thrust on say setting 2.

Plan for the future....even if your not going to use it now....I'd buy the link, and 80lb thrust. Once you use a spot lock system and see how well it holds in current and wind....you be wishing you purchased the link to unlock the full potential of your bird...if the your bird doesn't have the capability to link...when you up grade it....it will

If you're not too far from Southside, Bucks boats usually has some used ones. I'd go with a 80 lb 24 volt.

17 foot boat I would suggest the 70/80lb.

Get the one with the transducer built in, it will save you some serious headaches in the future. I made that mistake and regret it.

One of the biggest differences between terrova and ultrex is electric steer vs cable steer. I had a 12 volt 45 lb terrova on a 17.5 tracker and it did ok. I could not get used to the electric steer. I changed to a 24 volt 80 lb ultrex and it does great. Will never have anything else.

The electric steer pedal feels like using a sponge (and not in a good way!)
