Garmin Fishfinder Help
One of my goals next year is learning more on how to use my fishfinders to help find fish. Here’s an issue I have- I have 2 garmin UHD’s networked together. When I’m idling a bank I see fish and structure, but once I stop and start fishing I don’t see 1/4 of it on the front unit. Is it that big of a difference in 3mph vs .3mph, or something off?,

To me si is almost useless when you are not moving. When you see something you like, drop a way point and go back to it and fish.

A very good fisherman that I fish with showed me the importance of tossing a marker , I try to have one in my hand and when an interesting piece of structure shows up on my screen I turn and toss a marker. Typically I scan at 2-3mph and If I toss when the structure first comes on screen it will land pretty darn close and be findable with LiveScope or 2d on the bow. I’m sold on the value of tossing a marker. Especially when I’m going to one of my waypoints I’m ready to toss when it first shows on screen.

Remember SI is looking 90° to the side of the transducer ... if the transducer is on the transom - that’s actually 5-6ft behind the steering wheel ...
So as soon as something interesting comes into the top of the SI image - that target is 90° to the side of the transducer ...

When I see something interesting,I want to investigate, I will move cursor to it. That will stop your screen from scrolling. Mark that with a waypoint.
Go to maps and go to the waypoint. It will get you in the general area. Then use down scan or live scope to investigate more thoroughly to fish or not fish.

Thanks for the reminders and tips. I’m trying to learn to spend at least an hour every trip just tinkering with DI/SI and mapping. Learned to find winter bluegill and even stumbled across a new brush pile today.

I have SI on my bow mount trolling motor, having it there is a killer on Crappie. Last fall Crappies were scattered all over structure in the general area, would pic up or two and then done. With my SI I would swing my trolling motor to find the next closest structure hit waypoint and go to and repeat and rinse all afternoon.
Open water schools same thing once found and start fishing, schools do not stay put, swing the SI and know where and which direction they were traveling. Me personally would not be without SI on the bow.
