    Default Safe distance for DI?

How deep of water do you need to feel comfortable going over a pile with DI? Assuming outboard or trolling motor? I don't want to scare the fish off so I lean toward SI to keep my distance.

    Thanks,
    tha dude

Dude .... I think the big motor sound & prop wash are more detrimental to the situation than the depth of water your DI ping is running in.
I've gone over cover in less than 10fow with my DI & not noticed any problem, and now I've experienced & personally done the same thing with a DI & Livescope numerous times without spooking the fish.

I do, however, know of instances on this one local lake (where the water is consistently clearer than the other lakes I fish) where there are times when you can't get closer than 20-25ft of a school ... regardless of what electronics you have running ... or they simply move off or scatter. That's been experienced firsthand by a couple of guys I know that have Livescope. Now, as to whether it's the ping of the units, the trolling motor noise, the presence of the boat, or other things ... it could be any of them or all of them, but does seem to occur more often when the waters are on the more clearer side.

To simplify my Q, do you run over any pile with your outboard running? On what situations is DI okay? Only deep water or only with trolling motor?

Me personally don`t worry about it much ever go swimming in the summer all the noise underwater is unreal. I worry more about clear water and boat shadow more then anything. Ever seen a bird fly over casting a shadow on the water and the fish scatter or even throwing a small bait over shallow water, or any fish in the upper water column.

Really depends on water temp , water clarity , and depth . No magic numbers here . I have seen them run on live scope in 20' of water way ahead of my boat . Also caught them in stakebeds bumped the stakes and kept biting in less than 6' of water

I fished for years and years in a 15' john with no trolling motor. I used the 35 hp to stay on the brush, never cut it off. Fished right down beside the motor. I'm sure there were lots of times that this was detrimental to catching, but there were lots more times that I put limits in the cooler.
