    Default Basic Sonar Question?

You're in a tiller boat idling along at about 1.5 mph. You could be using nothing but your trolling motor, or your engine. Either way the boat is not moving fast, maybe even less that 1.5 mph. The depth finder indicates that you just ran across a brush pile for which you have been searching. The image has not even made it a third the way across the screen, but that has to be it! You take out a marker buoy and toss it behind you. Question is......how far? I have not read anything here about image delay relative to speed relative to distance traveled after the image first appears, much less one third across the screen. Anyone have any tips? Thanks

If you are using 2d sonar most of them are real time meaning little to no lag as soon as it shows up on the screen drop a marker where your transducer is mounted down imaging has a little lag for history but still same principle for me it will have you very close

Your 2d sonar image is from a 3D cone shape. If you are in 25 feet of water that cone covers more area forward of the transom (under the boat) than if you are in 10 feet of water. So throw a buoy behind you, do a U-turn and go over from the opposite direction and throw a 2nd buoy. Try fishing in between them.

There is also margin of error left and right because you have a 3D cone and a 2d image. That pile could be 5 feet to your side. So be sure to fish all around your buoy. Good luck!

Activate the cursor on the depth finder, move the cursor to the structure on the screen and drop a waypoint on it ...

2d, DI, or SI doesn’t matter - if the structure is still on the screen = place a waypoint on it ...

Even Lowrance (and HB SOLIX) has a “scroll back” feature that allows to scroll back the Sonar history some and mark waypoints on the Sonar screen ...

Keep the wind in mind and throw the marker far enough away so It don’t blow over the top of the pile and get it you’re way.
