    Default 898 problems

My Humminbird 898 sometimes will not come on and if it does come on it will shut off for no apparent reason. I am having trouble determining the cause. If the unit is on and you start the big motor it will often shut off. I have a Helix 7 in the front of the boat that functions correctly. Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated.

Sounds like a power issue. Can you put a voltage readout on your display?
    Could be:
    1. Bad power connection on the unit
    2. Corroded or lose connections in the power circuit
    3. (Possible but unlikely assuming it’s worked fine before) Inadequate wire gauge allowing excessive voltage drop
    4. Weak or poorly charged battery

I agree with mikear, first thing I would check would be wiring connections where you attached to battery, any splices you may have made or where connected to fuse panel if that’s where you connected it to. Your getting juice at times but not enough to start or keep running at times.

My 898 was doing the same thing, couldn't figure it out, the battery started getting weak so I replaced. Problem solved, didn't do it again. Now I don't know if it was a drop in voltage from weak battery or I had a loose connection and fixed it when put in new battery. My guess is is weak battery that dropped to low when starting.

Best I can tell is 10Vdc is the minimum voltage required at your unit. Check the things mentioned here and hopefully you’ll find your issue.

I’ve had power issues with one of my 798’s and my 898. Both times I disconnected the power and moved the posts on the power plug and problem solved. Left/right to make a better connection, and just a very litttle. Hope it works for you like it did me.

Does it have the black plastic piece that captures the wires and then bolts into the unit?. My power lead was shaking loose for just a split second long enough to turn power off. I took one the two pins on the power lead and bent it ever so slightly then wired it back up and tightened the wire holder back up. Bending the pin gave it a little pressure to help it from shaking loose.
