I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I just want to be sure I don't blow up my new radio. I have 2 12 volt batteries hooked together to get 24 volts to my trolling motor. I assume If I hook the hot and ground from the radio to the hot and ground post of just one of the batteries I should be ok correct?

I would use the first battery of the series connection, the battery that feed the negative to the TM for this application. IF you use the second battery, the one that the positive to the trolling motor. This is a safety issue.
If you use the second battery for +12v (+ and - ) source, the ground to the equipment would be +12v with respect to earth ground.

Thanks that's what I did. I used the positive and negative on the first battery.
