Rolling SW back on a Garmin
This is for those tech-savvy Livescope users who want to try rolling back to a previous version due to the livescope quality issue in the last "perspective" release (GLS10 version 2.30). I assume no responsibility whatsoever if you brick your devices. I am an electrical engineer with many years of experience in HW and SW development, so tech topics are easy for me.
It is completely possible to roll your software back to a previous version - if you have the correct update bundle file from Garmin for your unit. Garmin publishes the procedure on their website "Performing a Forced Update", and a link to the procedure was given to me by Garmin support when I called in to report I have the PLS issue. It is a safe procedure, but only if you have the correct file! Unfortunately, Garmin will not provide older SW files.
I always used AC to update mine, so I did not have the previous file, but I was able to find someone who had it by posting on bbc.com Garmin forum. Ideally you get the most recent one prior to the last "perspective" update. Garmin makes three flavors of update bundle file: GPSMAP, legacy GPSMAP, and ECHOMAP. If you go to support page for your model, chose software, and you can click a link to see a list of models each file includes, and verify your model is on that list.
When I got the (ECHOMAP) file, I unzipped it to an SD card. The only root folder is "Garmin", and in the folder there should be a single file named GUPDATE.GCD, and a single folder named "updates". DO not use your AC card for this - get another card. I used an 8 GB card I had laying around. Once you have this SD card set up, you can follow the update procedure. Note: I assume NO RESPONSIBILITY for anything that goes amiss if you try this. Proceed at your own risk.
For my Ultra 102sv and Livescope, with the unit OFF, I simply removed the AC card, put in the update card. Note: you need to keep the network cable connected to the GLS10 module and have it ON if you use a switch - I don't use a switch. Then I powered up by holding the power button down until a message "Forced loader recovery" or something like that appeared after 10-20 seconds, and released the button. This is the procedure for the Ultra - your unit may be different. Then I let the unit do it's thing. It updated the Ultra, then after a while another screen came up, and it updated the GLS10 "black box". It worked perfectly, and my unit was rolled back to the previous release versions 10.0 for the Ultra, and GLS10 module version V2.20. I have not tested it thoroughly due to weather and work, but it seems to be just as it was before the perspective upgrade.

Talked to a Garmin techie this morning. He is of the OPINION that the fix to 18.10 will be released this week. Tests have been very positive and should be released soon. He also caveats that opinion with a caution that it is not guaranteed. I was going to follow Jaws excellent method but figured I had a 3 out of 10 chance of screwing it up (smile). As the LS is still usable, just not as clear, I figure I can wait another week, or so. Just my opinion...

Just got off the phone with Garmin and they are saying that an update to fix the update should come today or tomorrow let’s keep our fingers crossed.

I did say this was for "tech-savvy" folks, who seem to be in the minority when it comes to anglers, LOL. I'm trying to help some guy on BBC who can't follow directions, lacks reading comprehension and grammar skills, and doesn't know the difference between a file and a folder. This is why I could never be a fishing electronics support person. Some folks should just fish, and leave the computers to someone in the family who knows what they are doing.
I am glad to hear a fix is on the way. I will be loading it immediately to go test when it comes out. Hey, if there is any issue with it, at least I know how to safely roll it back.

Just loaded the new update, but it is storming and I might not get on the water today. The update loaded version 11.20 on my Ultra 102sv and ver 2.33 on the GLS10, fyi. The change log notes say the update restored the ver 2.20 "gain tables", for what that is worth, so I'm not expecting much difference from ver 2.20, except adding Perspective mode, that is. I mean it is prob like 2.20 with Perspective mode. Prob won't test until tomorrow, it is raining cats and dogs here.

I had tried an update with Active Captain a few weeks ago when perspective first came out. I did not do it correctly as my GLS10 box was turned of by switch by mistake. This time, I first checked all cables were tight and all connected to network and all power switches /breakers on.
Removed Active Captain drawing/community chip and inserted the update chip with the newest release of everything i had downloaded on a pc. I then powered up the 126sv holding down the power button to bring up the loader. It powered on the 106sv automatically and found everything on the Garmin network and the NMEA 2000 network. One by one it updated each unit.
I can't wait to try it with my new homemade fully adjustable perspective modeable mount I put together. I just hope they keep the boat ramp open here...
